Yes, I’m the wife of my very talented and humble professional photographer husband who “takes pictures” for a living.  My favorite is when I’m eating dinner with his family while he’s busy on a shoot and they ask, “What kind of shoot is it?”  They’re pretty conservative folks so I save them the drama and usually reply, “Oh, it’s a personal shoot.”  I’m not sure what that means but they leave it at that.

But I think his work is wonderful.  I especially enjoy meeting his new clients, watching their relationship grow and trust build up before the shoot, and then seeing the amazing images afterwords.  Boudoir photography is where his skill as a sculptor of light and his ability to SEE really shines.  I have yet to see a woman come through his studio without producing some really stunning images.

His artistic and technical skill aside there is something to be said for his clients.  A HUGE something.  I’ve been trying to put my finger on what makes them special and so beautiful during these shoots, which has inspired this post:

How to Look Good Naked

1. Confidence.  The whole thing has to be nerve wracking, I know.  Here you are, in your skivvies, inexperienced as a model, and there’s a CAMERA pointing straight at you?  Ladies, this is where it counts.  Dig deep down and pull out your inner tiger.   Remember what a bad ass you are for being there in the first place.
2. Makeup.  Hire a professional.  They are artists.  Makeup for the camera is different than makeup for everyday. You’re already investing in professional photography.  Go this extra step.   We have MUAs we can recommend that we love.  You’ll be glad you did.
3. Wardrobe.  Be yourself here.  Like Sophia said, it shouldn’t detract from the real star of the show, YOU, only enhance it.  Choose clothing and accessories that make you feel sexy, strong, mysterious, playful, vulnerable… whatever your vision is.  Blue jeans are just as classic and sexy as a beautiful piece of lingerie.  That’s my next wardrobe of choice.  That, and a great pair of shoes.
4. Have Fun. This might be the most important quality.  I can’t believe how many of Chris’ clients come away from the shoot so jazzed up and ready to do another one!  They’re having a great time and it shows in their images.

Since I’m nine months pregnant right now (and 33 lbs heavier and counting) I’m so tempted to think how critical of my body I’d be if I were to try to have boudoir photography taken of myself a year from now.  But this list reminds me of what really makes a woman beautiful.  Real women have curves and class. Not these 12 year old models with stick rail thin bodies we’re told is normal.  Viva la woman!

Secrets in Lace

I stumbled upon this enchanting little boutique while reading my favorite underthing blog, The Lingerie Post.  For starters I loved their tag line:  Stop Wearing Underwear, Start Wearing Lingerie. It’s the perfect summation to what beautiful lingerie can do for a woman.  Lingerie is beauty concealed, waiting to be REvealed, the most intimate article of clothing we wear.  The mere presence of something beautiful shaping and framing the naughty bits is enough to give me confidence and that certain something that makes me feel special throughout the day.  Underwear is so utilitarian.  It does the job but without the style and grace a girl needs sometimes.
